Brian Mercer

Brian Mercer

“You’re an artist who does no art”

That was perhaps the most influential thing anyone has ever said to me. I had always been involved in art. Since I was small, all the way through teen and college years, but I strayed. I spent years running around Philadelphia with my head on fire; sampling drugs and booze, fraternizing with stoners, strippers, gangsters, metal heads and punks, and meanwhile finding myself in the music of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, and the Allman Brothers. Plus, I discovered punk through the religion of skateboarding. All the while, I was surrounded by the art of comic books, punk flyer art, and skate zines. Still, something was missing. I couldn’t find happiness in what turned out to be an experimental lifestyle, and I had no stability. Then, my brother Kevin and a friend (thanx Matt) held me down and told me I wasn’t following my true calling in life, art. I can’t thank them enough.

So I got to work, but as is usual in most things in my life, I had to find my own way (the hard way). I focused and fooled around with different mediums. I started incorporating everything that influenced me and put it into my sketches, paintings, and finally my posters. Soon bands started to take notice. Down and Alabama Thunderpussy gave me initial support. Since then, I have been blessed with being able to work with bands that I love and respect. Plus, I found exciting new bands and friends along the way. I am truly lucky. The small triumphs that I have accomplished have allowed me to expand on my wildest dreams. Any support I have now, or in the future, is greatly appreciated. Thanks for stopping by!
